Mayim Bialik is an American actress and neuroscientist who stars on hit TV show The Big Bang Theory as Dr. Amy Farrah-Fowler. She recently featured in a SodaStream video with Game of Thrones actor Kristian Nairn, who plays Hodor.
Did you enjoy filming the SodaStream commercial?
Oh, yeah. The script is really clever, and working with Kristian was such a treat! Although, he had to do a lot of heavy lifting so I did plenty of telling him what a great job he was doing; and being grateful I did not have to do such heavy lifting! Filming in in Ukraine was a really special experience as well; I have family from there so it made the whole shoot really meaningful and significant personally.
Do you own a SodaStream machine?
I grew up having “seltzer” delivered to my house in crates because my parents were from the Bronx in the 1940s and 1950s when seltzer was a popular beverage. So I love SodaStream because it’s so much more convenient than having crates of glass bottles delivered; and it’s more fun because my boys like experimenting by adding different fruits and flavors to it. Plus, they fight over who gets to “press the button” so owning my SodaStream is an exercise in patience too!
What do you wish you could tell your 10 year old self?
I would tell my 10-year-old self that it’s OK to be different and the pain that you feel about being different will become less and less as you become more comfortable with yourself.
What are your hobbies?
I play piano and sing when I have a voice…I like puzzles and board games. I love being with my kids and teaching them Neuroscience. I also love cooking and baking and cleaning and organizing things – I’m quite domestic!
What is your best piece of advice / words of wisdom?
You’re not only an actor but also a neuroscientist! As a neuroscientist, what would be your number one tip for better health?
Eat well and drink well. What we consume is directly linked to how our bodies function – or exist in dysfunction. So many of us today are touched by health problems which we know are epidemic because of our diets like high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes or struggles with weight and obesity-related conditions. Healthy eating requires a bit more planning, but healthy drinking – consuming less sugar drinks and cutting back – or cutting out! – carbonated corn syrup-laden drinks is one of the easiest things we can do to improve our health. We also categorically under-hydrate (the Neuroscientists in me is coming out!), and this has a tremendous impact on our physical and mental condition. A hydrated brain is a healthy brain – and water is really all we need!
What’s next for Dr. Amy Farrah-Fowler on The Big Bang Theory?
Well if you watched the season 10 finale of TBBT I’m sure your jaw was on the floor, mine certainly was then I first read about it… I literally had no idea this proposal from Sheldon was coming. Like: none. So, if you want me to tell you what happens in the season opener of season 11…I can’t, because I don’t know! Your guess is as good as mine! Sure, I have opinions and ideas… as an actor and a writer, I could see this playing out several ways. But that’s not my job right now. My job is to wait through the summer to see what our writers decide!
What’s next for you?
Work on season 11 for TBBT will begin soon, but until then, being a mom is a full-time job. I am creating weekly videos for my YouTube channel and we have had several of my videos go viral this past year. My website GrokNation.com is growing and happy. We cover serious topics, fun topics, Big Bang topics, and everything we feel compelled to share about!
What’s been the hardest thing for you about losing the use of your voice recently?
Parenting! My kids are almost 9 and 11, and they are patient as they can be, but it’s hard not having mama to talk to!
